La Pèira

Exceptional Winemakers

La Pèira, founded in 2004 by Karine Athon and Robert Dougan, a well-known film score composer, is located in the commune of Saint André de Sangonis. This area has been a certified AOC since 1948 and is recognized as one of the northernmost zones of the two Clairette du Languedoc AOCs. Not far from La Pèira, in 2007, the earliest known winery in France was discovered (AD 10). La Pèira's first wine appeared in 2005, the same year the AOC Terrasses du Larzac was established.

La Pèira has its origins in vineyards with old vines, chosen for their exceptional terroir, favorable microclimate, and unique soil composition stemming from the late Jurassic mountain ranges. From the very beginning, there was a pursuit of a balance between traditional and modern winemaking methods. This has resulted in wines that combine finesse and elegance with power and depth.

“Easily one of the top estates in all of France” - WINE ADVOCATE

Old Vines as the Foundation

The soil here is deep and gravelly, originating from the Holocene epoch, similar to that found in the Médoc, Graves, Saint-Emilion, and Pomerol, but on the other side of the Massif Central. Where the Gironde flows in Bordeaux, the Hérault flows here. 150 million years ago, limestone deposited in the north mixed, through the deposition of river channels, with sand, silt, and clay, which explains the current soil composition.

The estate spans 15.3 hectares, planted with Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Carignan, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Clairette Blanc. Since 2020, all vineyards have been organically certified. Cellar master Nicolas Giraudeau embodies the new direction of Las Flors de La Peira, with vineyards of old vines.

“The leading estate in all of the Languedoc and Roussillon.” - JEB DUNNUCK

Limited Production

The average annual production is 6,000 bottles of their grand cuvée, La Pèira, and 8,400 bottles of the second wine, Las Flors de la Pèira. The vineyards are planted with Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Carignan, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Clairette Blanche. Other wines produced include Obriers de la Pèira (20,000 bottles), Deusyls Blanc (3,600 bottles), La Pèira Blanc (960 bottles), and Matissat (1,320 bottles).

The average Parker score, based on the past 10 years, is the second highest for La Pèira’s flagship wine compared to Premier Grand Cru Classé châteaux from Bordeaux. Only Château Haut Brion scores slightly higher.

"Make no mistake about it, this is a very special wine made on a very special estate.” - JANCIS ROBINSON
