Ornellaia
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia: cradle of the Supertuscans
Between the Unesco protected town of Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci in the Maremma Livornese, we find Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. The wines from this area have surprised the wine world in recent years, leaving many a wine lover dreaming. Bolgheri is the birthplace of the "Super Tuscans," of which Ornellaia is undoubtedly the greatest representative. The estate covers 91 acres of vineyards, planted with Bordelian grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The first vineyards were planted in the mid-1980s and are now producing their best quality.
French grapes, Italian world-class
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia strives to produce world-class wines with maximum respect for Bolgheri's unique terroir. Four wines are vinified at the estate, the flagship being the Ornellaia: a typical Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This wine has a dark red color with aromas of black fruits and notes of humus. The slightly smoky but very refined flavor is followed by a velvety finish in which the silky tannins and wood flavor are balanced. This is undoubtedly a wine of rare class.
"The 2021 Ornellaia captures all the magic of this sensational vintage on the Tuscan Coast."
Le Serre Nuove is Ornellaia's 'second vin' and undergoes the same maturation in oak barrels as well as similar care in the vineyards. This wine has a similar blend to its big brother. Le Volte has a Mediterranean character: slightly spicy, with aromas of ripe red fruits and a mouth-filling finish. Masseto, a special cru of 100% Merlot, rivals the greatest wines in the world. It is often compared to Château Petrus because of its similar grape variety.
Geological treasure trove of Ornellaia
The Ornellaia estate has a rich history, with parts once covered by the Mediterranean Sea, leading to deposits of sand, marl and marine fossils. At higher elevations, clay surfaces, dotted with limestone pebbles of various sizes. The soil is of marine, alluvial and volcanic origin, and the vineyards are divided into dozens of plots, each with its own unique identity. Mediterranean shrubs and forests grow around the vines. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the main grape varieties on the estate, followed by cabernet franc and petit verdot. For the white wines, Sauvignon blanc, petit Manseng, Viognier, Verdicchio and Vermentino are used. The vineyards are mainly oriented southwest to catch the last rays of sunlight that set over the sea.
The art of winemaking: detail and dedication
Discovering the potential of the land for viticulture was the starting point, but without vision and perseverance there would be no Ornellaia. Nature is a generous friend to Ornellaia and they strive to respect her resources. This is the essence of Ornellaia, her past and her future. Attention to detail is crucial. At Ornellaia, everything they do, in the vineyard, the cellar and in the day-to-day management of the estate, is a matter of sensitivity. Many small details form the unspoken link between simplicity and continuous improvement. Intimate knowledge and utmost care for the vines are the basis of the approach to terroir. The vineyard consists of many small plots, each receiving individual care to promote the expression of their unique character.
