Rhum Barbancourt
Pure expression of Haitian heritage: Rhum Barbancourt
In 1862, Dupré Barbancourt began applying the traditional production methods of his native Cognac - including double distillation and aging in French oak - to pure sugar cane juice from his adopted homeland, Haiti. Exactly 160 years and five generations later, those methods are still being used to produce extraordinary rum at the family distillery he founded, which is now considered an institution of the island nation. The traditional production technique of Rhum Barbancourt is listed on the Haitian Cultural Heritage Register in 2021.
Barbancourt farms some 120 hectares of sugarcane land while partnering with more than 3,000 growers and today relies on a specific aromatic hybrid sugarcane variety to differentiate their products, the exponent being the 5 Star Réserve Spéciale. Developed by the founder himself, it was originally called La Goutte d'Or ("The Golden Drop").
