Gaja

The Man, the Myth, the legend: Angelo Gaja

Angelo Gaja gained world fame with his wines from Piedmont. This picturesque area, meaning "at the foot of the mountains" and indicating its proximity to the Alps, was part of the French kingdom of Savoy until the 19th century. The special combination of wine and gastronomy and the beautiful hilly vineyards remind many people of French Burgundy.

Heritage of five generations

Angelo Gaja is among the fifth generation of winemakers in his family. It is noteworthy that this family has been one of the first to bottle their wines since 1859. This long tradition of winemaking is carefully passed from father to son, with each generation having brought new fame to the family heritage. Over the years, the Gaja family has increased their influence in Piedmont by gradually adding the best vineyards to their property.

The greatness of contemporary Gaja is due to several factors, including the modern winemaking techniques of the experienced Angelo and his daughter Gaia. Together they make their wines with great passion and dedication. Although Gaja considers each vintage unique, their wines bear a recognizable characteristic: pure, clean elegance. The combination of modern techniques and glorious tradition is crucial to their success.

Gaja's innovative approach is evident in their choice of grape varieties and winemaking methods. Planting cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay in Piedmont shows boldness and drive. Since 1990, they have no longer bottled their renowned cru's Sorí Tildin, Costa Rusi and Sorí San Lorenzo as Barbaresco DOCG, but rather as communal Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. This change underscores their "different" approach and desire for innovation.

The Tuscan Conquest

The acquisition of Pieve Santa Restituta in Brunello di Montalcino and Ca'Marcanda in Maremma shows the ambitious vision of the Gaja family. With the Brunello's Rennina and Sugarille, Gaja has two wines in house that stun their competition. The decision not to bottle some vintages highlights their continued pursuit of perfection without compromise.

In Maremma, with wines such as Promis, Magari and Camarcanda, Gaja strives to be the absolute best. The Ca'Marcanda estate, called by Angelo Gaja "the house of endless negotiations," features a state-of-the-art wine cellar designed by renowned architect Giovanni Bo. Ca'Marcanda's exceptional qualities are due to the unique terroir and specific location of the vineyards. This combination of unique substrates and Gaja's in-depth knowledge and experience makes the domain extra special.
