Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé

Comte Georges de Vogüé: Leading domain of Chambolle Musigny

Comte Georges de Vogüé is the largest domain in Chambolle Musigny, both in area and fame. The estate, arguably the most renowned in all of Burgundy after Romanée Conti, owns 7.2 hectares of Musigny Grand Cru. This is a whopping 70% of the entire appellation! In Chambolle Musigny's other Grand Cru, Bonnes Mares, the estate has 2.7 hectares of vines. Within the Premier Cru they own 56 acre Les Amoureuses, plus Les Baudes and Les Fuées, together accounting for 34 acre. Finally, in the appellation communale they have 1.8 hectares, all together accounting for 12.6 hectares.

Through the centuries

Since its origins around 1450, the domain has always remained within the same family, by inheritance or marriage, and is thus, after 5 centuries, reaching its 19th generation.. Elisabeth, Baroness Bertrand de Ladoucette, took over the estate in 1987 when her father, Count Georges, died.

During this period, some very important and, it will be seen shortly thereafter, leading figures were recruited. Namely Eric Bourgogne as in charge of the vineyards, François Millet as cellar master/oenologist and Jean-Luc Pépin as commercial manager. Together, they managed in no time to phenomenally improve the quality of the wines and restore the image of Vogüé as the estate was known at the end of 1940.

Spectacular wines

Since 1990, the wines have been downright spectacular. Like purebred classic Burgundies, these wines require at least 10 to 15 years of cellar aging. Because of its grandiose structure and concentration, which highlight its enormous potential for preservation, the wines can resemble a Bordeaux in their younger years. Of course, it is a matter of patience before the wines reveal their phenomenal potential.
