Quintodecimo
Quintodecimo: A dream in the heart of Campania
The history of Quintodecimo begins with a deep family commitment to viticulture, originating in the winery of Luigi Moio's father, Michele Moio, a historic wine producer from Campania. Michele Moio, who in the 1950s revived the legendary Falerno, a wine once loved by the ancient Romans, laid the foundation for the passion his son Luigi would carry on. After studying agronomy and additional studies in Burgundy (1990-1994), Luigi returned to Italy in 1994, determined to realize his own vision for viticulture. This vision became a reality in 2001, when he and his wife Laura founded the Quintodecimo wine estate. It was a dream that grew into a symbiosis of science, innovation and respect for the terroir.
Terroir as a guide
The name Quintodecimo is not only a tribute to the history of the region, but also a reflection of the rich past of Mirabella Eclano, where the wine estate is located. The area was once the Neolithic settlement Aeclanum, which later became a Roman colony and was destroyed by the Lombards in the 7th century. The name "Quintum decimum" refers to the distance of fifteen miles from Benevento, which over the centuries has defined the character of this land. Quintodecimo's wines come from this ancient and rich terroir, where the family winery is committed to the highest quality and authenticity.
The estate is located in the mountainous interior of Irpinia, a region in Campania known for its volcanic soil and unique microclimate. The climate is temperate, with cold winters and mild summers, providing ideal conditions for viticulture. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 460 meters above sea level, which contributes to a slow ripening of the grapes and thus a more complex flavor profile. The soils are rich in minerals, creating wines with a strong connection to their origins.
"Wine is Earth's song to the sky"
Like a good family man
At Quintodecimo, the vineyards are treated as true gardens, with each plant maintained with care and attention. Sustainable winemaking practices are central to vineyard management. Noxious products, herbicides or fertilizers are used, and soil management is done mechanically. This respect for nature ensures that the grapes are harvested ripe, healthy and undamaged. In addition, soil fertility is supported by agronomic practices such as revegetation, mulching and green fertilization, which promotes natural balance. All of this aims to produce wines that have a deep connection to the land.
The vineyards are spread over several parcels and at different altitudes, which ensures an optimal ripening climate for the grapes. The diversity in terroir allows the wines of Quintodecimo to fully express their complexity and finesse, reflecting the richness of nature and the dedication of the winemakers.
Exceptional class
Quintodecimo is known for its outstanding wines that reflect both the rich tradition of the region and the innovative approach of Luigi Moio. The estate's portfolio includes some of the most prestigious Italian wines. The Taurasi, a powerful red wine made from the Aglianico grape, is one of Quintodecimo's gems. This wine is known for its deep structure and elegant tannins, which perfectly reflect the character of the volcanic soil.
In addition, Quintodecimo produces some of Campania's best white wines, such as Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. These wines reflect the freshness and minerality of the region, with the grapes capturing the essence of the terroir. The Fiano di Avellino is a full-bodied, aromatic wine, while the Greco di Tufo is a wine known for its lively acidity and complexity.
Each wine is carefully vinified and aged, with attention to detail and respect for the natural processes. Luigi Moio's scientific background allows him to experiment new winemaking techniques without losing the authenticity of the terroir. This commitment to innovation, combined with a deep connection to the region, makes Quintodecimo's wines unique and distinguished in the world of Italian winemaking.
"A great wine is the perfect blend between poetry and science, between the imponderable and the measurable. It is essentially beautiful, a work of art" - Luigi Moio
Life's work of the Moio family
What makes Quintodecimo truly special is the way the estate brings the Moio family's dream to life. Luigi Moio's passion for terroir and his scientific approach to winemaking have made Quintodecimo a pioneer in the modern Italian wine industry. The winery is not just a business, but a life's work, in which each bottle of wine reflects the family's history, location and dreams. The estate is a symbol of dedication, quality and unwavering belief in the power of the land. Quintodecimo is a true example of Italian perfection in winemaking, where each wine is a tribute to the terroir, family and long history of this special area.
Grand Cru Luigi Moio
Quintodecimo is a unique and magical place. A wonderful adventure, characterized by the surprising and continuous discoveries of the extraordinary potential of Aglianico, which in the varied mosaic of the micro-terroirs of Quintodecimo amplifies its many subtle expressions.
Since 2001, with patient and continuous work, the small hills of the estate, located at an altitude of between 400 and 480 meters, have been planted with this extraordinary grape. This created an enchanting amphitheater around a circular vineyard, consisting of sixteen rows in a spiral shape, evoking the magic of the golden spirals of the Fibonacci sequence in a fantastic play of harmony and beauty.
The Grand Cru Luigi Moio Taurasi Riserva, twenty years after the creation of Quintodecimo, completes the original design for the Aglianico: to create great red wines that are the ultimate expression of this noble grape and the authentic and exciting image of its terroir. A rare combination of clay and limestone that gives the wine freshness, finesse and elegance. A wine that conveys the magic between the soil and the vine, a distinctive sign of Quintodecimo.
Grand Cuvee Luigi Moio
In 2021, Quintodecimo celebrated its 20th anniversary. Intense years of work, study and passion, during which we realized the dream of living among the vineyards and producing high quality wines, which are a "return" to the original areas, with the full respect for the environment, and with very high ethical and cultural values.
The knowledge gained in these years about the interaction between soils and the historical grape varieties of the region, together with the desire to pursue quality, has created the right conditions to produce a new wine, the result of long experiments with the grapes Greco, Falanghina and Fiano.
In the Grande Cuvée Luigi Moio, the three grape varieties from Campania are brought together to create an exclusive wine, in which nature has been assisted by man with the intention of harmonizing the tones of each, so that nothing is dominant, but everything is in beautiful balance. A wine that contains the synthesis between the extraordinary vocation of the fresh and windy hills of Irpinia and its vineyards, a perfect expression of a refined style that brings together harmony and elegance, the distinguishing characteristics of the essence of Quintodecimo.
Twenty years after its founding, this is the first wine to bear the founder's name, in tribute to the great passion of the man who founded Quintodecimo.
