Clos des Papes, Chateauneuf du Pape - Paul Avril
Clos des Papes, icon in Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The Avril family has been active in the viticulture of Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the early 18th century. The current management of the estate is in the hands of Paul-Vincent Avril, who is considered a talented successor to his father, Paul Avril. Clos des Papes has been known since its inception as an important reference within the appellation. This reputation is not always accepted without question, but remains justified because of its consistently high quality. The family is also known for its warm hospitality, making a visit to this property an unforgettable experience.
Papal wine
The name "Clos des Papes" derives from the historic papal vineyards within the fortress of the ancient Châteauneuf-du-Pape castle, of which only ruins now remain. The estate's vineyards are spread over 17 parcels within the appellation. They range from the sandy soils in the southeast and west to the loamy and calcareous, rocky plateaus in the north and northeast of the region.
Keep it simple
Under Paul Avril's direction, the proportion of Grenache grape in the wine's composition was gradually reduced to make room for more Syrah and Mourvèdre. These three grapes are the main components, supplemented by small amounts of other grape varieties such as muscardin, counoise and vaccarèse. The vinification of the wines is done according to traditional methods. Since the mid-1990s, the red grapes have been completely de-ripened without losing the suppleness of the wine.
Clos des Papes is produced in two varieties: red and white. The Avril's deliberately do not make special cuvées, and grapes of lesser quality are sold to négociants. The wines are bottled unfiltered and unclarified, a method used since the 1980s, provided the tannins are not too overpowering.
Treasures in the basement
Although the Clos des Papes can be drunk relatively young after cellaring for five to six years in good millésimes, the wine is best known for its exceptional ageing potential. This makes it an excellent choice for the passionate lover of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines who is looking for a wine with depth and complexity over time.
